HD 49 candidate named immigrant of year

Justin Hwang, who was born in South Korean, has received the Portland Immigrant Statue immigrant of the year award.

"This is an incredible honor to my family and I," Hwang said. "When I arrived in America, all I had were my parents, a little money and a big dream. Through hard work, dedication and support from my family, friends and others, my big American dream is coming true."

The Portland Immigrant is named for the Portland Immigrant Statue at the traffic triangle bordered by Northeast 99th Avenue, Northeast Killingsworth Street and Northeast Sandy Boulevard.

The award is presented to an individual who has immigrated to Portland, has accomplished personal career goals and contributed to the local community or their country of origin, according to an Oct. 8 letter from the organization.
