Cherry blossoms focus of Capitol celebration

It is he time of year when visitors descend on Salem to photograph State Capitol State Park in its botanical glory.

COURTESY CAPITOL FOUNDATION - Demonstrations of the Japanese tea ceremony will be part of Cherry Blossom Day events Saturday at the Capitol.Dull bureaucratic buildings aren't the only thing Salem has in common with the nation's capital.

Like Washington, D.C., cherry trees bloom every spring in Oregon's capital city.

A spate of them are on the state Capitol mall, and the state Capitol is celebrating those blossoms Saturday, March 16.

The event also celebrates the area's Japanese heritage.

Visitors can enjoy a full slate of free activities and can learn about everything from Japanese calligraphy to Bonsai trees from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the state Capitol. The building will also offer tower tours that day.

The event is free and open to the public.
