A much-needed bit of normalcy
Not all is doom-and-gloom in Salem.
The cherry trees in Capitol Mall Park are in full bloom. Those mindful of keeping their social distance can enjoy the show. There's plenty of room.
The trees were planted in 1991 when the underground parking facility was built underneath the mall. Leaks in that parking structure prompted state engineers last year to ponder whether it was the trees' roots that were the culprit, which would have necessitated their removal.
But it turned out to be a leak in the waterproof membrane under the dirt and over the roof of the garage. Engineers were able to solve the problem without harming the trees.
