- STATE OF OREGON - Secretary of State Jeanne Atkins
Thirty years before she was appointed Oregon’s secretary of state, Jeanne Atkins had her five minutes of fame on “The Today Show.”
Atkins plugged her 1985 appearance on the talk show earlier this month in an op-ed for the Portland Business Journal.
She appeared on the show for about five minutes to discuss bias in commercial lending to women; at the time she was an attorney at the Women’s Equity Action League. She was interviewed alongside Marybeth Bernhardt, a commercial loan manager for the DC National Bank.
Atkins’ Oct. 6 op-ed stated that women business owners still face inequities today, and encouraged women to “work with policymakers and make their voices heard in business industry associations,” pointing out that by her office’s math, a low percentage of women participate in such associations in Oregon.
Atkins, who has long been involved in Oregon politics and was a staffer for U.S. Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore. prior to taking up her current post, is not running for reelection.
