Former legislator uses fake pig to root out waste

An opinion piece in Forbes Magazine this week drew attention to campaign contributions to and donations from employees of the state’s labor bureau, which is lead by Secretary of State candidate Brad Avakian.

That article was based largely on public records requests filed by a foundation run by Jeff Kropf, a former Republican state legislator from Sublimity, who now travels Oregon with a giant fake pig named Petunia.

Petunia bestows “Porker Awards” on government agencies — one was given to the city of Corvallis for its efforts to encourage biking and energy-saving lightbulbs.

Jeff Kropf was a state representative for eight years and is currently the Oregon director for Americans For Prosperity, according to his Facebook profile.

In recent years, the apparently papier-mâché Petunia, who crosses Oregon in an open trailer, visited Pendleton, Salem and Josephine County, among other Oregon locales, according to the foundation’s blog.

Petunia has her own Twitter account, too, calling out what she characterizes as wasteful spending — from university research to diversity training.

“She not only roots out government waste, her round belly demonstrates she dines well on government waste,” Kropf wrote in a blog post in 2015.
