Senate Democrats elect leadership for 2017

SALEM — The two top leadership posts in the Oregon Senate will remain the same in the 2017 legislative session, but some new names have joined the ranks of leadership.

The Oregon Senate Democrat caucus chose their leaders Friday during meetings at Salishan Resort on the Oregon Coast.

Peter Courtney of Salem was nominated for an eighth term as Senate president. He must be confirmed by a full vote of the Senate on Jan. 9.

Ginny Burdick of Portland kept her influential post as Senate majority leader.

“I am honored to be reelected by my Democratic colleagues to sere as Senate majority leader,” Burdick said in statement. “I look forward to continuing our work in the upcoming session to focus on priorities for everyday Oregonians: jobs, transportation, quality education and standing up for the middle class.”

Mark Hass of Beaverton also was reelected as Senate majority whip, as was Michael Dembrow of Portland, Senate assistant majority. New faces to leadership are Laurie Monnes Anderson of Gresham who will succeed Diane Rosenbaum of Portland as Senate president pro tem. Like Courtney, Anderson will need to be confirmed by the full Senate.

Rod Monroe of Portland who will serve as Senate majority whip and Chuck Riley of Hillsboro who will serve as Senate assistant majority leader. Sara Gelser of Corvallis was promoted from Senate assistant majority leader to Senate deputy majority leader.

Senate Democrats lost one seat during the November election. Alan DeBoer, a Republican from Ashland, won the seat of Sen. Alan Bates, who died in August at the age of 71.
