Eleven people have been appointed to the governor’s new foster care advisory commission, according to the governor’s office.

Following a series of revelations about the state Department of Human Services’ failings in the administration and management of child welfare in the foster care system, the commission was created under Oregon HB 4080 to study child foster care issues and recommend legislation.

Four of the tentative commissioners — Caroline Cruz, Robin Donart, Nicole Stapp, and Katelyn Robertson — served on the governor’s external advisory committee to examine the specific issue of child safety in foster care.

Cruz is a general manager for the Branch of Health and Human Services for the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs, according to the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs website.

According to the external advisory committee roster, Donart works for Maple Star Oregon, while both Stapp and Robertson are alumnae of the foster care system and are affiliated with Oregon Foster Youth Connection, an advocacy group for current and former foster youth.

Other members of the commission include William Wagner, of Bend; Emily Reiman, of Eugene; Gina Valerie Colas, of Salem; Kari Rieck, of Corvallis; Christine Hartmann, of Gresham; Lluvia Merello, of Portland; and Timothy Colahan, of Burns.

The eleven appointees require senate confirmation.
