The Oregon Capital Insider has happened upon a little insider pattern: legislative office phone numbers correspond to the number of the district that the representative or senator is from.

In both chambers, all legislative phone numbers start with area code 503 and then the digits 986.

The two penultimate digits are “14” in the House and “17” in the Senate.

Then the last two digits of legislative office numbers correspond to the district number.

So let’s say you live in Senate District 6. You’d call 503-986-1706. Or perhaps you live in House District 43. You’d call 503-986-1443.

But the exception proves the rule: if the Speaker of the House is your state rep., or the Senate President your Senator, you’ll have to memorize a different number.
