Ah, the Straw Poll Party, where Oregon Democrats mix, mingle, and take the temperature of their fellow party members.
As the name suggests, the party — held at the Oregon Summit, the gathering of Democratic Party of Oregon in odd-numbered years — features a straw poll asking party attendees to select the next president, next governor, secretary of state and “a rockstar Democrat.”
Speaker of the House Tina Kotek, of Portland, was the favorite for the next governor (per state law, Gov. Kate Brown, who is running for reelection in 2018, cannot run again in 2022).
Rep. Dan Rayfield of Corvallis was elected for SOS and former Speaker of the House Val Hoyle — in the running for labor commissioner — was deemed the rockstar.
Meanwhile, U.S. Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., got the most endorsements for president in 2020.
And what’s a party without some libations? While your faithful correspondent sipped a seltzer water, many Democrats quaffed something a little stronger.
The crowd favorite appeared to be the “Repeal and Go F*ck Yourself,” which was described as a “healing tonic” comprised of Bend Distillery’s Crater Lake gin, triple sec, lime juice, ginger ale and orange juice.
Aside from wine and well drinks, two other specialty options were on the menu:
The “Covfefe,” referencing a mysterious spelling error in a Tweet from POTUS 45. Its ingredients? Vodka, sour mix, Curaçao, soda water and lemon. “Only Trump knows why it’s blue!”
And the “Mooch”: Vodka, pink lemonade, soda and lemons. An allusion to White House Press Secretary Anthony Scaramucci, who was ousted after a profanity-laced 10 days in the West Wing. “Sweet and sour, but no substance and gone before you know it,” the menu noted.
