With COVID-19 and the economy dominating the news, Oregon’s 2022 political campaigns have had struggle to gain voter attention at the beginning of the election year.

Most of the the relatively muted attention has gone to the residency question of Democrat Nicholas Kristof, the former New York Times columnist who filed to run for governor. The Oregon Supreme Court is expected to rule as early as the end of the week.

Public in, guns out: Legislative leaders closed the capitol to the public in March 2020 at the start of the pandemic, reopening it last summer during a lull in infections. It will remain open during the 2022 session, though ongoing renovations limit access to some areas.

Sen. Michael Dembrow, D-Portland, wrote in a newsletter last week that metal detectors will be used at entrances. A new law prohibits the public from bringing firearms into the capitol, even with a concealed carry permit.

About 30 state capitols employ metal detectors, according to a 2021 count by the National Conference of State Legislatures
