PORTLAND — President Joe Biden visited Portland on Thursday, April 21, to talk infrastructure and to raise funds for Democrats. From here, he was headed to Seattle.
Highlights of the visit included:
• After making a public statement at Portland International Airport, Biden ventured to the Portland Yacht Club for a fundraiser. Protesters were encamped outside the club.
• On the inflation woes that hit the country, Biden blamed supply-chain problems exasperated by the COVID-19 epidemic, and gas prices. Before arriving in Portland, the president had linked gas price increases to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and world-wide sanctions against Russia.
• He talked about hundreds of miles of decrepit roads, bridges in poor condition, and vital infrastructure vulnerable to an inevitable earthquake.
• Biden touted his $1 Trillion infrastructure spending bill, saying $42 million of that will be spent on airports, including $19 million for Portland International Airport. He also touted spending on seaports, which includes major funding for a modernization of the facility in Coos Bay.
