SALEM — A lottery sock creation by Sock-It-To-Me seems to be uniform footwear these days at the Oregon Lottery headquarters.
Portland-based Sock-It-To-Me, which peddles whimsical sockwear at stores such as New Seasons and Powell’s Books, produces the lottery-themed textile. The design, set against a green backdrop, features images symbolizing the different beneficiaries of lottery sales proceeds: an apple for education, a money sign for economic development, fish and drops of water for watershed enhancement and a tree for state parks.
Mark Strickler, lottery senior marketing communications manager, and Farshad Allahdadi, lottery chief of sales, were both wearing the socks as they sat in succession at the lottery commission’s meeting Jan. 27.
Strickler paired his with polished black dress shoes. Allahdadi sported his with some black Birkenstock shoes and a tailored suit.
“He’s from Portland,” a coworker explains, referring to Allahdadi.
At least a dozen lottery employees were wearing the socks Friday, Allahdadi said.
The socks are sold for $5 for women and $5.25 for men at the Oregon Lottery’s gift shop at 500 Airport Road Southeast in Salem and also are given out as prizes at lottery events.
Interestingly, Sock-It-To-Me was an indirect recipient of lottery proceeds. The company, which started out as a stand at the Portland Saturday Market, received an economic development grant from Business Oregon to expand its operation. Details of the grant were not immediately available Friday afternoon. More than 3,000 vendors worldwide now sell the company’s foot- and heart-warming products, according to a Sock-It-To-Me promotional video.
