Senate President Peter Courtney, D-Salem, is a big fan of his cycling classes at the Salem YMCA.

He’s known to attend midday classes — he says they’re “incredible” — at the YMCA, a couple blocks west of the capitol on Court Street NE.

After Courtney won re-election, his cycling classmates gave him a cheetah print hat and exercise pants.

“Excuse me, I call myself the cheetah, that’s why I am a cheetah,” Courtney said Tuesday. “…I happen to be, I was very fast. And even now I’m an old cheetah, speed’s gone down…they say, ‘here comes the cheetah,’ …well, what were you expecting, a turtle?”

Whether he knows it or not, the senate president is on trend with the animal print attire: According to Vogue, animal print was a hit on runways this spring.
